Julius Caesar was the one who created the Roman Empire. He was in charge of a very large and powerful army and became one of the most powerful and popular people in Rome. The Roman senate made him a dictator after he defeated Pompey the great in a civil war. Yet after a rumor spread that Caesar could be crowned king, some Romans rebelled. Cassius, Decius, Metullus, Casca and Trebonius assassinated Caesar out pure jealousy, yet their leader, Brutus, killed Caesar for what he thought was right. It didn't work. The people, led by Mark Antony and Octavius Caesar, hunted down the conspirators, and had them killed. Brutus and Cassius escaped Rome, and raised an army of loyal supporters. But Antony and Caesar had taken control of the Roman army. The two armies met on a hill, and fought and clashed for many hours. By the end of the day, the army of Brutus and Cassius had been defeated. Cassius had died fighting, and when Brutus had lost, he gave up all hope and threw himself onto his sword. Antony and Caesar had won.
Octavius (Augustus) Caesar
Octavius Caesar was the first Roman Emperor. The senate gave the name Augustus to him in honour of his great victories and achievements. He and Mark Antony were the ones who avenged the death of Julius Caesar by destroying the army of Brutus and Cassius. They murdered Julius Caesar with four other conspirators. Soon Augustus and Antony became enemies. Augustus defeated Antony and the great Queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. With the help of the Roman Senate, Augustus created the Great Roman Empire. He ruled over Rome and the rest of the Empire. He created many great buildings, roads and armies. Not only was he the first, but he was also the greatest.
